British players continue Melbourne success

While Peter Norfolk and Lucy Shuker both secured places in Australian Open finals today at Melbourne Park, just 10 minutes down the road at the Albert Reserve Tennis Centre, fellow British wheelchair tennis players David Phillipson, Marc McCarroll, Andrew Lapthorne and John Parfitt have enjoyed a successful opening day at the Melbourne Open, an ITF 3 Series tournament on the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour.

British No 2 Phillipson and British No 3 McCarroll have both reached the men's singles quarter-finals after recording straight sets victories over Australians Daniel O'Neil and Michael Dobbie.  Third seed Phillipson plays Australia's Jerry Markoja in the last eight, while fourth seed McCarroll takes on New Zealand's Eamon Wood.

In the quad singles, top seed Lapthorne and Parfitt will meet in the semi-finals after easing through their opening matches.  Lapthorne won his opening match of the season against New Zealand's Chris Harvey without dropping a game, while Parfitt lost just one game in beating American Pani Herath.
