British players make bright start in Geneva
Four of the six British players in action during Tuesday's first day of the Swiss Open Wheelchair Tennis Championships in Geneva successfully progressed to the second round in their respective men's singles and quad singles events.
British No 2 Gordon Reid and British No 3 Marc McCarroll made bright starts to their final tournament before next week's British Open in Nottingham as they eased past French opponents in the men's singles.
Reid beat Jean-Noel Joseph without dropping a game and progresses to a second round match against Dutch second seed and world No 4 Maikel Scheffers. Meanwhile, McCarroll earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Michel Burgnard and now faces Austrian world No 9 Martin Legner. Legner ended the main draw singles hopes of reigning National champion Alex Jewitt after a 6-1, 6-1 victory, with Jewitt now going on to contest the men's consolation singles
Former British No 1 Jayant Mistry, who is making a rare overseas appearance after going into retirement as a full-time athlete in 2007, made a fine attempt at joining Reid and McCarroll in the second round as he took a one set lead against French eighth seed Lahcen Majdi. However, after Majdi managed to come from behind to take the match into a third set he eventually prevailed 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.
Britain's Liam O'Reilly and John Parfitt also faced French opponents in their opening quad singles matches and both eased through to the quarter-finals. O'Reilly beat Manuel Chevalier 6-1, 6-0 to book his place against American third seed Bryan Barten in the last eight. Meanwhile, Parfitt faces Swedish fourth seed Anders Hard after sweeping past David Alves Cerqueira 6-0, 6-0.
Wednesday's second day of play sees Britain's top two women players Lucy Shuker and Jordanne Whiley begin their challenges as they take on Italy's Marianna Lauro and Maya Pellissier of Switzerland respectively. Victory for both Shuker and Whiley would see them go on to meet each other in the women's singles quarter-finals.
