Cyclefest Leads Mobility Roadshow Sports Agenda
If you have any kind of mobility difficulty it doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t take a cycle ride or enjoy team games. At the Mobility Roadshow - 1st - 3rd July, East of England Showground, Peterborough - you have more than a sporting chance to try a host of disability sports.
The Roadshow Sports Arena is always a popular feature at this annual event. As well as trying out both team and individual sports you can watch demonstrations and join in with some of the countries leading players.
New this year is Cyclefest focusing on special needs cycling, offering a great opportunity to try out in a specially designated area, a wide range of cycling options from tiny trikes to companion and wheelchair cycling. The charity Cycling Projects will help visitors assess their requirements and Handcycling UK will advise the best vehicle match for this form of ‘wheeling’.
Companies at the Roadshow specialising in cycling needs for people with disabilities include newcomer to this sector, The Mountain Trike Company, at its first show and launching a new concept vehicle, which the company describes as a mountain bike for wheelchair users; manual powered with patented lever-drive propulsion, which they say easily tackles the steepest hills. Team Hybrid is unveiling a lighter Lithium-ion battery pack offering its Cougar power-assisted handcycle enhanced distance capacity. Ashfield Special Needs will have its latest trikes, side-by-sides and wheelchair trikes and London Recumbents is showcasing its full range including passenger cycling, wheelchair cycling and tandems.
Vivacity, Peterborough Culture and Leisure Trust, will be promoting its adapted cycle scheme, with bikes available for visitors to try. Peterborough Raceway is the only UK karting circuit to introduce disabled driving and will unveil its new two-seater adapted kart at the Roadshow.
Already lined-up in the Sports Arena are rugby and rugby league (tag rugby), sledge hockey, basketball, archery, accessible climbing wall, dancing and fitness, laser clay shooting and the Disabled Shooters Group will advise on how to get involved with this sport in your area.
Visitors can talk adaptive sailing with the Even Keel Project at the show for the first time and for younger visitors Go Kids Go is running practical skills workshops, particularly helpful to build confidence in new wheelchair users.
High flying visitors should talk with Flying Scholarships for the Disabled and enter a draw for a free flying lesson or take a helicopter ride with the British Disabled Flying Association in association with Heli Air (there is a fee for this activity).
Sir Stirling Moss opens the Roadshow on the first day, Alastair Hignell will be sharing tales of his rugby, cricketing and broadcasting days with visitors on Friday, and on Saturday demonstrations by the Red Wheelies scooter formation display team feature in what will be the strongest interactive Roadshow sports programme yet.
