National Junior Games

national junior gamesThe National Junior Games is an annual event at Stoke Mandeville for children with disabilities aged between 11 and 18 years of age.

All the children attending will have a physical or mild sensory disability, including partial blindness.  Up to 300 children will take part, with around 80 escorts and 70 officials.

Young people receive instruction from qualified coaches and experienced athletes in a wide range of sports, including archery, athletics, basketball, boccia, bowls, fencing, handcycling, kurling, polybat, powerlifting, shooting, swimming, table cricket, table tennis, tennis and zone hockey.  The Games combine “have-a-go” sessions with coaching and competitions, in three different age groups.

The National Junior Games can be an inspiration to young people with disabilities to reach a high level of sporting achievement. Emma Brown, GB’s powerlifting gold medallist, and Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson took part in the games and developed careers in powerlifting and wheelchair racing at the highest level. The event enables children to try out a number of sports with advice and assistance from experienced coaches, before beginning to specialise.

In addition to sport, the games will include a social programme, providing an opportunity for relaxation for the participants, parents, and teachers.
