National Junior Games
National Junior Games
From 2012 the Games will have 2 different elements; the ‘National Junior Games’ and the ‘National Junior Wheelchair Games’ that will run over six action packed days from the 2nd ? 7th October. The first element of the Games will closely follow the current format of having friendly competition and ‘have a go’ opportunities in a variety of sports, and will be open to young people with a physical or sensory impairment aged 11 to 18 years old. Due to the mid week dates for the games greater emphasis will be placed on school and group team entries. Entrants will arrive on Tuesday with activity beginning Tuesday afternoon. The Games will finish after a closing ceremony on Friday afternoon. To reduce the requirement for external accommodation, accommodation at Stoke Mandeville Stadium will be fully utilised and therefore there will be a maximum entry of 150 competitors with an entry fee of £70 per person attending. Alternatively, if you wish to use external accommodation it can be arranged at your own cost.
The second new element to the Games, the National Wheelchair Games is for young people aged 11 to 18 years old that use a manual wheelchair to participate in sport. Due to the weekend dates for the Games there will be a greater emphasis placed in individual entries. Entrants will arrive on Friday evening or Saturday morning and depart after a closing ceremony on Sunday evening. The Games will have a greater emphasis on structured competition with informal classification alongside ‘have a go’ opportunities in a number of sports. The ethos of the National Wheelchair Games will still follow that of the National Junior Games being a fun and friendly competition. This element of the Games will again utilise the accommodation at Stoke Mandeville Stadium with a maximum entry of 50 competitors with an entry fee of £50 per person attending. It is possible for competitors to enter both the National Junior Games and National Wheelchair Games if applicable.
The rationale behind the decision to update the format of the National Junior Games has come from feedback from participants, parents, personal assistants, teachers, volunteers and coaches. In addition the new format will ensure the sustainability of the Games for the foreseeable future within limited funding and with the aim of keeping the Games affordable for participants.
