Katherine is 36 years old and originally from Oxford, but now lives in Cardiff, after enjoying her time at University in this fantastic city. She has Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and is a full-time wheelchair user. As she explains, “I am not able to walk and have chronic pain as well as frequent dislocations and subluxations of joints. I need to keep my connective tissue as strong and toned as possible to help keep my joints in place so exercise is very important.”
Before the Covid-19 pandemic Katherine had been visiting an adapted gym and trying to find the right balance of exercise to suit her needs. Unfortunately with the lockdowns in Wales she was unable to carry on doing this and looked for alternate ways to stay active from her home. After seeing a post about the free WheelPower Resistance bands on social media she applied for her own set and has been using them frequently ever since. “I have been using the resistance bands from WheelPower to do some of the exercises I learned from the physiotherapists during my rehabilitation at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore.”
“I think that having something to do at home has given me a focus and I think the pandemic has given me time to concentrate more on what my body needs, as there are not so many distractions because of the lockdowns!”
The WheelPower resistance bands come in various colours and strengths, as well as some great attachments which allow the user to attach safely to a door handle for example. This has allowed Katherine to use them most days, and adapt the strength of the band to how she is feeling at the time.
“I really like the bands as they help me to keep a firm grip when exercising as I struggle to hold regular bands. I’m using them most days, and have definitely felt a bit stronger and more toned. I’m trying to build a strong core to help my posture, which has deteriorated over the years. I need to do enough exercise, but not too much, as this can cause severe pain and fatigue and weakness in my limbs. I also struggle with the cold, so being able to workout at home is really useful.”
“I also like to stretch my legs by putting the band around my foot, I like this exercise as my muscles feel tight and knotted. I think doing simple, short regular exercise has helped me physically as well as improving my sleep. I definitely feel some relief from stretching gently.”
“Thank you WheelPower for such a simple and clever idea of giving out resistance band sets. There are so many extra costs when you are disabled, so this has really helped. I think the classes online are a great idea too. When you have a disability that may make you isolated (especially if you are shielding), having a focus during the day makes the day go quicker and helps you to sleep better. Small accomplishments, like doing some exercises with these bands, are important especially when normal routines or social activities are not available because of the pandemic.”
It is fantastic to hear how Katherine has benefited from her set of resistance bands and we hope that they will continue to help her in the years to come. We are also very grateful to Katherine for sharing her story with WheelPower and that it may help to inspire others to enjoy exercise and apply for a free set of bands too!
