Sam is 40 years old and from Swindon in Wiltshire. As a fully qualified Level 4 disability / rehab personal trainer, group fitness and seated exercise instructor she was very interested in the WheelPower Resistance Bands programme as the equipment would not only benefit herself, but a much wider group of people who she supports to stay active in her community.
Sam has spastic diplegia cerebral palsy. As she explains, “I have it bilaterally so it affects both sides of my body. My left arm and right leg are my weaker limbs. It also slightly affects my speech too. I had a miss cot death at 9 weeks old, which resulted in my CP.”
The start of lockdown resulted in a big change to Sam’s weekly routine as similarily to WheelPower she sought to adapt her delivery to online. “I went from doing 12 classes a week, and being very active in my day job to sitting down all day working from home. This really affected my balance and I fell over more, and despite me continuing some of my classes online the lockdown was definitely having an impact on my own mental and physical health. I had not seen my CP like this before!”
“My classes dropped by half but I managed to switch some to zoom. A few of my ladies were so thankful for my classes for keeping them sane, as they were still working from home. Unfortunately all of my private classes for day provisions, care homes and charities stopped and I still am unable to go back to these.”
On a personal side Sam has been able to continue to enjoy one of her favourite hobbies, Zumba! Sam loves Zumba and pre covid travelled to many events. “These classes make up a huge amount of my social life, and I have made many friends since I started. It was actually Zumba that got me loving exercise as a disabled adult 10 yrs ago and it has completely changed my life.”
When Sam heard about the resistance bands being offered by WheelPower she applied herself and also promoted them amongst her clients. “I am a sports coach working with various vulnerable groups across my local area and I now use these bands in my seated exercise classes and in my PT sessions with clients.”
"I have used resistance bands before but I have been absolutely gobsmacked at the prices of equipment during the pandemic, that I couldn’t afford anything. Whenever I looked what I wanted seemed to be always completely out of stock. So these bands from WheelPower have been brilliant and have helped me a lot. They are very versatile and you can perform most exercises with them which is fantastic.”
With the lockdown easing Sam has been able to return to face-to-face delivery, albeit outside and has also enjoyed being able to return to the gym once again. One of her clients is Donna (pictured above) who has Spina Bifida. They have been working together for over 4 years now and have really enjoyed using the bands as part of their new outdoor sessions. The attachments have meant they can be safely attached to a door as Donna has mastered in the photo.
“With my classes and regular workout routine I was able to keep my strength up at home during lockdown. I have nearly got back to my pre covid fitness levels and I am seeing an improvement in my CP being more active again.”
“I have also seen an increase in my online classes of more disabled people joining in and loving it. As disability is my niche, it is fantastic that I am able to reach more disabled people and help inspire more to be more active."
