Alex is our Physical Activity Adviser at The Princess Royal Spinal Injuries Unit in Sheffield, which is one of the larger units in the UK. His role primarily involves working with and supporting the unit staff, assisting in-patients with their rehabilitation. He organises and runs weekly activity sessions for the patients, to help with their rehab and also show them some of the activities they can do. He focusses on encouraging patients to be active once they’re discharged from the unit and find ways in which they can achieve this, using all the experience he has a wheelchair user.
Alex is 42 years old and from Sheffield and has been spinally injured 21 years. Alex sustained an incomplete SCI in 1997 and spent 6 months in rehab at The Princess Royal Spinal Injuries Unit in Sheffield. Since then been back to university and represented Great Britain at two Paralympic Games (Beijing and London) playing wheelchair tennis. Prior to working for WheelPower Alex owned his own home brew business . As well as working for WheelPower he also works for another charity and coachs wheelchair tennis.
As well as coaching wheelchair tennis, Alex still enjoys playing and competing. He enjosy handcycling and keeping fit and last year competed in his first triathlon.
