Hand Cycling

Hand Cycling and Handbiking

Handcycling is an inclusive sport that’s open to both adults and children.  There are many different types of handcycles which can cater for many different disabilities – enabling those with limited function to be able to experience the freedom that cycling provides.

The Hand Cycling Association of The UK (Hand CyclingUK) is a charity that promotes hand cycling as a sport and as a recreational activity. Handbiking is great exercise and helps keep you in good physical shape. You can be as competitive as you like or just ride your hand bike socially with your family and friends.

Hand Cycling UK organise regular handcycle taster days that take place over four weekends at Stoke Mandeville, the first being in April and the last in October. So it doesn’t matter if you’ve never ridden a handcycle before, you can borrow one of ours for the weekend or perhaps you fancy just coming for the Saturday or Sunday.

These are ‘open days’ where those interested can try the sport, using our own handcycles, in a safe environment, supervised by qualified British Cycling instructors.  These days are aimed toward beginners, we also invite experienced handcyclists so there is always plenty of expertise around to learn from.

The weekend is typically in two sections, and caters for both those that own a hand cycle and those who are new to the sport. On Saturday there’s a general coaching session, which is usually taken by qualified British Cycling Coaches, which offers a real insight into how to train for cycling. There is usually an optional Sunday ride for those who have their own handcycle. The June taster day is on the same weekend as the Tour De Vale Cycling Event, and those attending the taster day have the option to borrow a handcycle on the Sunday, which starts and finishes at Stoke Mandeville Stadium.
