Para Surfing

Surfing does not instantly come to mind as an adaptive sport, but with recent developments in equipment and training programmes surfing is welcoming people with a huge range of disabilities to the sport.

Surfing and Accessibility in the UK

Many surf centres across the UK are equipped to support a wide range of disabilities, offering adapted equipment that makes it easier and more enjoyable to take part. This includes surfboards with chest risers for prone surfing, seated surfboards, wetsuits with accessible zips to simplify changing, and beach wheelchairs to help individuals reach the water with ease.

Surfing England has also partnered with accredited surf centres to launch a Para Surfing Roadshow, which takes place throughout the summer and visits six locations across the country. These events provide an opportunity for people with disabilities to try surfing for the first time in a supportive and inclusive environment.

Each roadshow is hosted by accredited surf centres and delivered by Team England Para coaches who are highly experienced professionals who also train our elite para surfers competing on the international stage.

“It was amazing, honestly the best experience, everyone was so lovely and helpful and it was just wow! I never thought I would be able to try surfing and now I would love to again. Water has always made me feel free and feels to me like it takes my disability away and it was just a day where I didn’t feel my disability was a barrier and everyone just treated me like the same as them and that was lovely, but being in the water and surfing was the best, can’t explain how happy it made me. I felt like no one thought I couldn’t do it, and I love when people are like that, I’m fiercely independent and will try anything and they understood that, and although they helped they also let me try and do as much as I could.”

It was an absolutely fantastic day. I was nervous before I arrived, but everyone quickly made me feel at ease and I had a great time, thank you very much.”
