Margaret won four gold and two silver Paralympic medals and was given the honour of lighting the cauldron at the Olympic Stadium, opening the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London.
At the first summer Paralympic Games in Rome in 1960, Margaret won Britain’s first ever Paralympic gold medal competing in the Women’s Columbia round open archery event, scoring 484 points. Because of disorganisation in tracking the scores, she had to be taken from the coach heading back to the Olympic village to be presented with her prize. Maughan also took part in the Women’s 50 metre backstroke complete class 5 which she won in a time of 1:49.2.
Margaret competed at five Paralympic Games from 1960 to 1980 winning a gold medal in Dartchery at the 1972 games in Heidelberg, silver medals in Dartchery and Lawn Bowls at the 1976 Games in Toronto and a gold medal in the Lawn Bowls Pairs in Arnhem.
Margaret died on 20 May 2020 at the age of 91.
