We’re writing to you about something that matters deeply to everyone at WheelPower. The freedom to move and to live an active life.

Recently announced changes to the Motability Scheme will make it more expensive and less flexible for many disabled people to access the vehicles they rely on. For those who depend on their transport to stay active, attend training, compete, or volunteer, this could have a significant impact.

At WheelPower, we’re concerned about what this means for disabled athletes, and for the future of disabled sport.

What’s changing?

The Government’s reforms mean that VAT and Insurance Premium Tax will now apply to most Motability leases. This will increase Advance Payments by an average of £400.

For many people already feeling the cost-of-living crisis, this creates a new and serious financial barrier.

Motability has also announced further changes to the scheme, including:

·        Annual mileage allowances reduced to 10,000 miles per year

·        Excess mileage charges increasing 500% from 5p to 25p per mile

·        New restrictions on tyre replacements

·        Additional fees for taking vehicles abroad

Why this matters for disabled sport

Travel is not optional for wheelchair users who want to lead active lives. They need to be able to move around towns and cities, regions and the country to access training, competitions and their community.

Reducing mileage allowances and increasing costs risks:

·        Limiting the amount of training and competition a disabled athlete can attend

·        Isolating people from sporting communities

·        Forcing some disabled people out of sport altogether

At a time when we should be increasing the number of disabled people who lead active lives, these changes move us firmly in the opposite direction.

We must speak up together!

WheelPower stands alongside the wider disabled community in calling on the Government to reconsider these reforms and protect mobility, opportunity and independence for everyone who relies on the Motability Scheme.
