Climbing

Climbing is an enjoyable, exciting, and rewarding activity that can be enjoyed in a variety of ways. It takes place both indoors on artificial walls and outdoors on natural rock.

Some disciplines, such as top-rope and lead climbing, use ropes and harnesses to keep climbers secure at higher elevations. Other forms, like bouldering, take place on shorter walls without ropes, using thick matting to cushion falls.

Para-climbing (also known as adaptive climbing) is sport climbing for d/Deaf, Disabled, and neurodivergent individuals of all ages, abilities, and experience levels.

Thanks to the highly adaptable nature of the sport, climbers of all abilities can challenge themselves side-by-side on the same wall. Beyond being a fantastic physical activity, climbing is a brilliant way to develop problem-solving skills, build confidence, and boost mental wellbeing.

Who can take part?

Climbing is an inclusive activity for everyone, whether you are looking to try it for the first time or aiming to compete on the world stage.

To support each climber’s individual needs, venues use a range of equipment and techniques, for wheelchair users this may include:

  • Adaptive Harnesses for tailored torso and body support
  • Vertical Hoists & Mechanical Systems to assist with ascent
  • Wheelchair Abseiling options
  • Side-Support Climbing with trained instructors
  • Most dedicated climbing walls can provide equipment on-site, so there is no need to bring your own.

Association of British Climbing Walls: The leading industry body supporting indoor climbing walls across the UK. The ABC provides accessibility guidance, resources, and best-practice tools to help venues create safe, inclusive, and welcoming environments for disabled climbers.
