Kirstie is 30 years old and from the city of Leicester in the East Midlands. After being born prematurely she suffered a brain injury and was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy.
As she explains, “Until 4/5 years ago I was actually very able bodied, but now I can’t walk safely without an aid. I now have to use a powerchair outside of the home and at work because I can’t safely do more than 5m at a time.”
Since the beginning of lockdown Kirstie has discovered lots of online resources from originations such as WheelPower that have enabled her to stay active, keep kit, meet new people and ultimately have fun too. As the Co-Founder of the Cerebral Palsy Adult Advice UK Kirstie first heard about the WheelPower resources after a member shared our weekly café on their page. After discussing it with fellow members of their group Kirstie joined friends Angel & Karen at their first café, and they have become regular attendees at the weekly sessions ever since.
“Before attending the weekly WheelPower Café’s I was doing no exercise at all because I wasn’t motivated to do so. When I first did the circuits with Ella at your weekly Café I didn’t even have the confidence to do it with the camera on, but with my friends help I now have no issue doing it with the camera on and continue to enjoy taking part each week.”
It is Ella’s more energetic classes that Kirstie likes the most. As she says, “I really enjoy the circuits sessions run by Ella as they are easy to follow and fun too. I have even been able take part fully whilst on a gym ball!”
After being introduced to the café and discovering the wider content and videos from WheelPower Kirstie now enjoys regular exercise workouts with her friends from Cerebral Palsy Adult Advice UK and it has become an important part of her weekly routine.
“I get together with Karen and Angel over a video chat via Facebook and we pick a different video from Ella to do each time. We not only have fun but we have all been so much more active too. Recently I have also managed to encourage a further two members on our page to do seated workouts. Like me initially they weren’t motivated to exercise on their own so I have decided to offer to do it with them via video. Starting in September this will be the third video session I’m doing with others, which is great.”
Prior to lockdown Kirstie wasn’t accessing any sport or activities and didn’t have a physio, but after seeing the benefits that physical activity has had she is now seeing a physio regularly and enjoying multiple online sessions across various different groups.
“Without these videos and online classes I wouldn’t have been motivated to do any form of seated exercise daily, which I’m now doing without fail. You are doing a fantastic job at WheelPower and I am really grateful for helping me to enjoy exercise again.” – Kirst.
